Chapter1: What is multicast?
Multicast is a kind of network communication type. There are two kinds of communication type including “Unicast” and “Multicast”. Each of them works differently and is used in different applications.We will use an IP camera streaming to multiple PC as an example to explain Unicast and Multicast.
1-1. Uni-cast:
Unicast is a network communication between a single sender (IP camera, video server) and a single receiver (Client PC or NVR) over a network. With unicast, the IP camera has to send an individual streaming for each client wish to see the images.
With unicast, the more the client number is, the greater the network bandwidth required and the greater loading of the IP camera (sender).
1-2. Multicast:
Multicast is a network communication between a single sender (IP camera, video server) and multiple receiver (Client PC or NVR) over a network. With multicast, the IP camera can send just one streaming and each client can receive the streaming.
With multicast, even with the client number increasing, the network bandwidth is still the same and the same loading of the IP camera (sender)
NOTE: The streaming transmitted by Multicast might be unstable and cause the images to either “Drop frame” or “Generate mosaic” when network is busy. This is because Multicast is using UDP protocol to transmit the data and the UDP protocol might cause some network package to loss during transmission.
2-1-1 Multicast with IGMP
Multicast with IGMP can send streaming only to PC wanting to receive it.
2-1-2 Multicast without IGMP
Multicast without IGMP send streaming to every PC on the network.
If any of the sender (IP camera) and the related network switch/router doesn’t support IGMP, the multicast with IGMP will not work.
NOTE: Multicast without IGMP is very likely to decrease your network performance and cause a lot of trouble. Please don’t use it.
Chapter2: How to make multicast work?
Because the multicast with IGMP works best, we will describe how to deploy a system supporting multicast with IGMP as below. There are 4 setups deploy it.
1st: Select the network switch/router.
2nd: Configure the network switch/router.
3rd: Configure the IP camera / video server.
4th: Configure the software
2-1 Select the network switch/router
Each of the network switches/routers in this system should support IGMP / Multicast routing. Otherwise the multicast will not work. Please refer to the page below.
2-1-1 If the switch doesn’t support IGMP
The switch will send stream to every device connected to it.
2-1-2 If the router doesn’t support Multicast Routing
The router will block the stream if it doesn’t support Multicast Routing.
2-2 Configure each network switch/router
There are two items much be set in the network switch /router. Because the configuration procedure of switch and router differs, please see the key items to setup and refer to switch / router’s manual for details.
2-2-1 For Switch
1. The “IGMP snooping” must be “Enabled”
2. The “IGMP Query” must be “Enabled”
2-2-2 For Router
1. The “Multicast Routing” must be “Enabled”
2-3 Connect and Setup the IP camera/video server
Please follow the procedure below to connect and setup the IP camera.
2-3-1 Connect the IP camera/video server via WAN port
2-3-2 Set the WAN port streaming type to “Multicast”
Please follow the IP camera/video server’s operation manual to login the IP camera /video server’s web-configurator. Then go to video setting and set the streaming type to “Multicast”.
2-3-3 Set the IGMP to “Enabled”
2-3-4 Set the “Multicast IP”
This setting is subject to your network design. Please consult your MIS. The default multicast IP is 228.5.6.1
2-4 Setup the software
For client to view the multicast images, below is the software available for the multicast.
Please follow the software manual for how to configure them.
Chapter3: Glossary
3-1. IGMP:
IGMP (Internet Group Management Protocol) is the standard for IP multicsting in the internet. It’s used to establish host memberships in particular multicast groups on a single network. The mechanism of the protocol allow a host to inform its local router, using Host Membership Reports, that it wants to receive messages addressed to a specific multicast group.
